Years ago, my daughter was taking piano lessons and playing variations on Pachelbel's Canon in D, which is one of my favorite pieces. I wondered if I could pick a series of chords and put a melody to it, and so that's what I did. The words came to me more slowly. The first verse actually came while I was imagining what I would feel like when my kids left for college. At the time, it was still several years off, but as I'm a plan-way-ahead type of person, I like to keep a handle on my upcoming emotional crises. It is also a breakup song, since the guy I was dating at the time was moving away.

This song was also completely written, as a piano piece, when I met Randon. We thought strings would be a nice addition, so he added those. It was used without piano in the closing credits of the Chuck Bentley film “Conjuring Venice.”
