I think we often create images of people in our head, the people we wish they were, that often aren't quite who the person is in reality, and this leads to disappointments. This was the last song I wrote on this album, and it came in pieces, like a puzzle. “Here, you put it together,” I told Randon. I gave him a preliminary recording of the vocals with a click track, sung along to piano plinking out the melody. He told me the chorus was hard because it kept changing time signatures between 3/4 and 5/4 time. I still say I'm not that clever. In my head, it's in 4/4, and anyway 3+5=8 so it should all work out. Regardless, I love what he did with this!
lyrics
I love the idea of you
You love the idea of me, too
Hold my hand
Squeeze it tight
Tuck me into bed at night
Teach me right
Teach me wrong
Teach me life is filled with song
Work all day
Get ahead
I'm listening to what you said
Keep me safe
Make me brave
Chase all my monsters away
I don't want life without you
I just want you to face
I'll go through my life at my pace
Go to school
And when you're done
Make sure you'll make it on your own
Make me smart
Make me strong
I promise I won't stay too long
So alike
It drives us mad
Can't we see we're not so bad
Before our hearts
Turn to stone
It's time I moved out on my own
I don't want life without you
I just want you to know
You've got to start letting me go
Let's set a date
But not too soon
Can hardly stand to share a room
Push my buttons
Make you mad
When I go home we'll both be glad
I miss you now
When you're away
But when I'm near can't stand to stay
You make it clear
I don't belong
Why can't we just get along?
I don't want life without you
I just want to see
You need to accept me as me
We're older now
We've learned some things
Enjoy the patience wisdom brings
How much time
Til our lives end?
I hope I will see you again
I don't want life without you
I just need you to see
That I'm doin' fine bein' me
I don't want life without you
I just need you to know
I'm doin' just fine on my own
And who'd you think taught me to?
I love the idea of you
You love the idea of me, too
