Sometimes you meet someone wonderful, but the timing is all wrong. Sometimes it's a matter of waiting, and sometimes it's not. I wanted this song to be dark and sad, because when I wrote it, I felt like a little glass figurine that had been hurled at a brick wall and now lay shattered in pieces on the concrete. I had written the lyrics and melody, but no accompaniment. I had piano in mind, something like the beginning of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, “with an arpeggio here,” I told Randon. I tried to write out the melody for him, but I found my rhythms hard to notate. The best I could do was write out the notes and figure out what key it was in. But wait... was the verse in a minor key and the chorus in major? Apparently so, but it didn't happen on purpose. Randon came back with something a lot like I had described but not at all what I wanted. “Too bouncy,” I decided. “It needs to be more sad, like my life is over. But there needs to be an arpeggio there.” A long time later, he came back with something completely different. The wind chimes are reminiscent of my shattered glass feeling, and the rest of the music feels as bottomlessly devastated as I did at the time, but with the hopeful arpeggio I had requested. The good news is, even when the answer is no, there is always the hope of finding happiness again!
